Pennsy Promises to Minimize Inconvenience at L.V.R.R. Crossings
By shortening its trains and increasing its motive power, as well as by co-operating with the L.V.R.R. in expediting the handling of freight, the Pennsylvania Railroad is to minimize the inconvenience arising from the blockading of the L.V.R.R. crossings.
This promise came, this morning, in connection with the case of Conductor George Henderson, of Derry, against whom the Burgess of Latrobe had preferred an action for an alleged violation of the Act of Assembly covering railroad crossings and their blockading.
The hearing in the case was to have been held this evening, after two postponements, but the time was advanced to this morning, to meet with Mr. Hendersons convenience.
The Burgess made it plain that it was not against Mr. Henderson, personally, that the action was aimed, primarily, it being admitted that Mr. Henderson had been ordered in off the main line with a train so long that the engine couldnt get it up the heavy grade. The Burgess also stated that Mr. Henderson had acted the gentleman all the way through, when asked by him to break the train.
The point, according to the position taken by the borough, was as to the necessity for relief from the inconvenience caused a large number of people by the blockading of much used crossings by trains which because of their length and their lack of power sufficient to cope with the heavy grade, would become stalled upon the crossings despite the efforts of the trainmen to avoid it.
The Pennsylvania company promised that it would see to the remedying of the evil in every way possible, and by agreement between the companys representative, Mr. Henderson, and the borough, the fine of $25, provide for in the Act, was imposed upon the defendant with the understanding that the payment thereof should remain in abeyance, and eventually be remitted altogether, in the event of the companys giving the relief promised.
