Suggestion Made That Crossing Be Abandoned In Return For Underground Passage
With the resumption of lessons, the Ligonier Valley railroad grade crossing situation has again become a menace, what with over a hundred little children compelled to make use of the crossings several times each day, in getting to and from the schools. The use of the tracks for switching purposes has become more frequent than ever, due to the increase of freight upon the railroad, and the danger, incident to the blocking of the crossings and the weighing of the cars has reached an acute stage.
To cope, as far as possible, with the menace, the superintendent of the public schools has arranged that the teachers of the lower grades shall accompany the children living above the railroad, over the crossings, at the noon and evening hours, while the parents of the children, in many cases, are seeing to it that the youngsters get safely across on their way to school in the morning and afternoon.
Meantime, the borough authorities, it is understood, have again taken up the question with the management of the railroad company, seeking a remedy for the situation.
One plan, said to have been suggested to the company and favorably received by the latter, would involve the abandonment of the Spring street grade crossing by the borough, in return for an underground passageway to be built at that point, by the company, for the use of pedestrians.
The crossing in question is used by but few vehicles, it is said, so that its abandonment would not lead to any great inconvenience, while the locating of an underground passage was at that point would be available, both for children attending the Second or Fourth ward schools.
It is likely that the matter will be brought up in Council.
