The Miners' Strike In The Valley

There had been a number of reports at various times that the miners of Latrobe and Bradenville were coming over to Ligonier valley to force the miners at the different works north of town to come out on a strike. On Tuesday afternoon of last week a crowd of marching miners estimated at from two to three hundred came into town. They were accompanied by a band and marched out the state road toward the mines a short distance but came back and finally located for the night in the Dunn barn west of town. Since then there has been considerable marching and commotion out about the mines, several of the works being without laborers in the mines, the men coming out in sympathy for the strikers. There however has been little trouble, as order has been maintained by the presence of the deputy sheriffs and thirteen members of the state constabulary who have kept guard and preserved order. Several slight disturbances have been reported but they proved either to be false or of little consequence. The men at the works north of town including the Columbia, Fort Ligonier, the Shenango, the Seger, the Marietta and the Fort Palmer plants are all satisfied, with their wages and their treatment by the companies and are out only in sympathy with the general strike of western Pennsylvania in which a recognition of the miners' union is demanded. If the strike continues much longer there is danger of serious trouble. These companies have always treated their men right and kept their wages up to the prices that have been satisfactory to the men.
