Their Lumber Operations Near Ligonier Were Destroyed
No Insurance Whatever
The Owners Intended Moving the Mill and Taking Out Protection.
Blaze Caught From a Spark
Fire destroyed a portable sawmill and a large quantity of sawed lumber owned by the Blair Lumber Co. on the mountain near Ligonier on Friday evening.
The Blair Lumber Co. is composed of James and David Blair, of this place, who will have to shoulder the loss of about $7,000.
Workmen were just finishing a few logs remaining about the mill, preparatory to making a new set of the mill this week. They did not discover the fire until it had made such headway that it was impossible to save the mill and practically all the sawed timber on the ground.
Owing to the business depression the market for lumber such as was sawed here has been slow, and a great quantity of it had been stacked. It was thought that the B&O railroad would take it in a short time.
There was no insurance on the property as it is not customary to take out insurance on lumber so long as the mill is being operated. The Blair Lumber Co. had expected to move the mill this week and then to place insurance on the lumber.
The loss on the mill is about $1,700, the balance of the loss being on the timber.
William Ballentine, of town, was the boss at the mill, and it was he who reported the loss to the Messrs. Blair in this place.
