Trip To Wilpen
Shown Thru Shenango Works and Into the Mines
We and our friend, J. D. Roberts, of Meadville, Pa., took a trip out to Wilpen last Wednesday afternoon to see the coal and coke works of the Shenango Furnace Co. After going out over the extension of the L.V.R.R. we soon found the general manager, Thos. W. Keighley, who took us thru the works and into the mines and kindly explained the various details of the operations of mining coal, crushing it and making it into coke. Everything about the plant of the Shenango Furnace Co. is of the best and most modern from the mining of the coal to shipping of the same as coke. They manufacture their own electricity for light and power, having two 1,000 dynamos. We were shown around this plant by Mr. Keighley and Mr. Ramsey, who has charge of this plant. From here we went into the main entrance over 2,000 feet and passed into a number of other places
seeing the men at work and coming out at a different exit.
There were 80 coke ovens in operation and other corresponding work going on. We were informed that by July 1 all of the 167 ovens will be in operation.
