Local Improvements Near Wilpen
Forty New, Good Houses Have Been Erected
Many Coke Ovens Are Being Built
Seger Brothers Have Bought Ten Acres of Land New Town To Be Called White City Shenango Co. Works, Seger Bros. And Marietta Works A Great And Growing Industry Along Hannah's Run
The greatest industry in Ligonier township is being developed along Hannah's Run in Ligonier township which will employ hundreds of men and resulting in the building of a mining town in that section that will have a population within a few months of more than 2,000 people. There is first and the largest, the Shenango works at Wilpen. These people are erecting 400 coke ovens which will require from 400 to 500 men to operate and furnish the coal for coking purposes. This company is busy at work making all necessary preparation for the mining and coking of their extensive field of coal and will soon be engaged in the shipment of coal and coke over the extension of the L.V.R.R. Bros. Who purchased the coal under the Henry Kuhns farm and last week bought about ten acres from the widow and heirs of Mrs. Samuel Murphy to give them room for building coke ovens and for shipping purposes, paying at the rate of $115.00 per acre, which land is so situated that it will be of special benefit to the new owners, are making preparations to push forward their coal enterprise.
The Connellsville-Marietta Co. which recently purchased the land and coal of the old Pollock farm are pushing forward the erection of ovens and the opening of the mines and the more recent purchases made of the McClure and other farms will open up a still different field for operations and by next summer this old historic Hannah's Run will witness one of the greatest coal industries of this county. The towns or Wilpen and White City will spring up at once into good sized boroughs and progress and enterprise will mark the landscape with coal plants, towns and the hum of industries. Already forty
good dwelling houses have been erected besides many small ones.
John M. White will lay out land recently bought from B. R. Robb in a town to be called
White City, the Shenango Co. will build the town of Wilpen and Henry Kuhns and
George Allen are selling lots on which houses will be built. Mr. Allen has had a bid for about five acres of coal on his farm. To all these improvements the L.V.R.R. Co. has built an extension which put these new industries within a few minutes ride of Ligonier. All this cannot help but be of financial advantage to Ligonier.
