Clair Stillwagon Purchased Part Of The Tosh Farm
Will Be An Outlet To Coal Land
Adjoins Extension To The Ligonier Valley Railroad And Will Be Used For Coke Ovens And Shipment Of Coal Which Will Be Operated From The Eshelman Farm Recently Purchased By Connellsville Capitalists
Monday of this week the deed was executed by which Mr. and Mrs. George Allen, Miss Martha A. Tosh and Miss Kate M. Tosh transferred to Clair Stillwagon, of Connellsville, Pa., two small tracts of land, parts of the Henry Tosh farm on Hannah's run, Ligonier township. The larger tract consists of 24 acres and 148 perches and lies on
the east side of the extension to the Ligonier Valley railroad and borders on it and adjoins the Eshelman farm on the east. The other and smaller tract contains 3 acres and 122 perches and adjoins the above railroad right of way on the east and extends to the township road leading out to the works of the Shenango Furnace Co. and the works of the Seger Bros.
The purpose of the purchase is to secure a frontage on the railroad for the coal works on the Eshelman farm and a place for the building of the coke ovens as this coal recently purchased by Clair Stillwagon and others will be developed and 50 ovens built. The purchase of the small piece gives a frontage on the railroad on one side and the public road on other side and was quite necessary for the proper working of this proposed coal plant. This land was first secured by A. B. Clifford from the Tosh people on an option and then transferred to Mr. Stillwagon who through John M. White, of Ligonier, and Elmer Welsh, J.P., of Ruffsdale, closed the deal. Squire Welsh with his family expects to move on the Eshelman farm in the near future where he will engage in farming.
The development of the coal on the Eshelman farm is another link in the chain of coal works and coke ovens that is being built along Hannah's run and which will help to make Ligonier valley a busy coal center of industry.
