Surveyors Who Had Gone Over Line of Youghiogheny And Ligonier Valley R. R. In Town Philadelphia Capitalists Said To Have Purchased Coal Tract In Fairfield Township Developments To Be Made Soon Persistently Reported
Last Thursday engineers who had gone over the proposed line of the Youghiogheny
and Ligonier Valley Railroad were in town, having come down the Loyalhanna creek to Rector and from there practically followed the same route as the P. W. & S. to Ligonier. They left Thursday morning by railroad for Indian Creek to do more work. Who they are working for, they do not know, neither does anybody else not in the secret of the affair. Who is having this work done? Will the road be built? When will it be built? All these are questions we would like to know and would gladly answer. We have heard of a great deal of guessing and conjecture and we might engage in this pastime ourself, but it wouldn't be information worth printing.
A very good friend of ours has informed us that he had been up in Fayette county along the line of this new railroad and that work of grading, etc., has been done until a short distance this side of the large Indian Creek reservoir of the P.R.R. Co. which has been put in, with it supply pipes carry water along the road at a cost of about $3,000,000 and that two roads have been graded, one a narrow gauge and the other a standard gauge, work on both these road beds which parallel each other having been done to about an equal distance. This section is all underlaid with coal and a number of test holes have been put down. The road has been surveyed along on the mountain side of the stream near Jones' Mills, and then down the Loyalhanna to Ligonier. Then what?
As to the coal development of Ligonier valley leasing and surveying and occasional purchases are still going on. Among the recent purchases is the coal underlying the farms of John McClure, the People's estate, David Ross and John McCoy, of Fairfield township, which have been purchased by Philadelphia capitalists. There are 205 acres and the consideration was $70,000.
D. M Menoher informed us that he and County Surveyor W. H. Matthews would go down Monday of this week to do the surveying of above tracts and when they are surveyed additional tracts in Ligonier township will be surveyed for the purpose of taking up the leases. This looks as though something might be done along this line. These business transactions are always necessarily shrouded in mystery and it will be wise to wait and see just what will happen.
