Big Lumber Deal
The Thomas Pollock Timber Tract Sold To Butler County Capitalists
W. J. Cooper and Dr. Frank Hindman, of Butler county, Slippery Rock, were in the valley last week the guests of J. H. Ankney and he sold them the old Thomas Pollock tract of timber land on the mountain above Waterford on the Johnstown pike. The tract consists of 800 acres well covered with timber and underlaid with coal. Price $21,000. They expect to begin operation in marketing the timber about the first of next September. This lumber will be hauled direct to the Morellville siding, Johnstown, Pa. This was an important timber deal and will put on the market a fine lot of good lumber. The tract belonged to H. B. Engle, of Indiana, Pa., being sold through the agency of J. H. Ankney.
These people expect to take the lumber to Morellville by means of a traction engine instead of horses and mules. The engine will haul two wagons of two thousand feet of green lumber each. The wheels of the wagons have six-inch tire and we are informed the engine will travel on good roads at the rate of ten miles an hour. It is said that lumber can be hauled by means of a traction engine much cheaper than with horses and mules.
