Connecting the Ligonier Valley Railroad With Somerset
Somerset, April 25. The Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset railroad is now a reality, the last rails connecting the Ligonier Valley with Somerset having been placed within the week, and during the coming few days connection will be made with the Somerset & Cambria, a few yards north of the Somerset borough line. Material is being delivered for the station and freight shed, which will be erected at the north end of Main Cross Street.
Considerable work remains to be done at the Quemahoning tunnel before locomotives of regulation type can pass through, and more or less track straightening and ballasting is yet to be done. The object the promoters of the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset have in view is still carefully gauged, but the fact that 90 pound rails have been placed on the section absorbed from the old South Pennsylvania, while steel of lighter weight has been used from Husband to Somerset and from Zufalls to Ligonier has led to a report that the road will be pushed through to Hancock, Md., where connection will be made with Goulds Western Maryland, or the B&O for a low grade line to Versailles, Pa.
