New Railroad
Will Extend From Connellsville Down The Loyalhanna To Rector
Last week the Echo was the first to publish an authentic account of the building of a railroad from Connellsville up the Indian Creek and then by Jones' Mills and down the Loyalhanna to Rector. Last Friday the Pittsburgh Post published an article pertaining to a new railroad of this same route which it says is to be a narrow-gauge road (this you may believe or not at your pleasure) and that the road is to be called the Youghiogheny & Ligonier Valley. The narrow-gauge part is certainly a peculiar feature. We republished
the article which is as follows:
"Westmoreland and Fayette counties are to have a new narrow-gauge railroad line which will connect the Baltimore & Ohio and the Ligonier Valley railroads and will open an extensive new lumber and coal section. A charter for the new line has just been secured, with a capital of $150,000. It will be built from the mouth of Indian creek, up the valley of that stream to Mechanicsburg, about 25 miles. That surveys were being made for a road up Indian creek, and some of the circumstances surrounding the project, were announced in the Post a few days ago.
"The new railroad will be known as the Youghiogheny & Ligonier Valley. The fact
that it is to be a narrow-gauge line is sufficient to attract wide attention at this time, as few or no narrow-gauge roads have been projected in this part of the country for some years, and nearly every company that owns any narrow-gauge track is figuring on how soon it can be converted to standard gauge.
"It is announced that both passenger and freight service will be operated on the new railroad, and that part of the line will be in operation by the end of this summer. The road will pass through Mill Run, Normalville, Indian Head, Jones Mills and other small towns, all of which hail the new undertaking with delight, for they have met with frequent disappointments in their hope for a railroad line.
"It is expected that the Youghiogheny & Ligonier Valley will cost between $150,000 and $250,000. Connellsville, Confluence and Mill Run business men are the incorporators of the new enterprise.
