About 400 Ovens To Be Built Soon
Engineers At Work, Office Has Been Erected And Laborers With Carts, Shovels And Other Implements Have Commenced Operations Ligonier Valley Railroad To Be Extended To Plant And Coke Shipped Through Ligonier
As has been frequently stated in the Echo, arrangements have been under way for some time for the building of coke ovens and the development of the largest coal field that is at present marketable in this section. This plant and all the coal fields in that part of the valley is owned and will be financed and operated by the Shenango Furnace Company. This company was formerly financed by the Oliver-Snyder Company of Pittsburgh and is now financed by the Snyder people who will build these ovens and develop this coal field for the use of their own furnaces. They have a number of furnaces at Shenango, not far from Greenville, Pa. The ovens are being built on the John Lytle farm, later the Rev. Allen Lytle farm, on Hannah's Run. Soon the hum of industry and the smoke of coke
ovens will take the place of the quiet farm scenes of this beautiful, fertile and historic valley along the winding Hannah's Run. Engineers have been at work out at the Lytle farm for some time getting ready for the actual work of building the ovens. Last week B. F. Shaffer & Bro. built an office for the use of the employes out at the plant; this week a number of carts and other improvements for work were taken out and actual operations have now been started and before many months the busy activities of a coke plant will be the result.
As our careful readers know, the rights of way are being secured from town out to the Lytle farm by the Ligonier Valley R.R. Co. for its extension to the coalfields in the valley. This road is already making shipments of coal and coke from the plants of the Fort Ligonier Coal Co. financed by the Peters company of Latrobe and the plant of the Old Colony Coal & Coke Co. and now will extend to the plant of the Shenango Furnace Company on the Lytle farm, making the Ligonier Valley railroad one of the most important coal shipping roads in this county. To get to this latter plant it will be
necessary to branch off from the present extension, pass through the Denny property, Alex. Barkely farm, Mrs. Galbraith farm, A. B. Clifford farm and that of Toshes, B. R. Robb and Henry Kuhns and Lytle farm to the plant. The rights of way have been secured from most of these people. These coal and coke plants are opening up a most important coal field and industry and hundreds of men will be necessary to keep these plants in successful operation.
