James Guptill Killed
Thrown From Car Of Loaded Logs On P. W. & S. Railroad And Binder Log Rolled Over Him
James Guptill, aged 38 years and married, an employe of the Byers-Allen Lumber company, met with an accident last Friday forenoon on the mountain which resulted in his death a few hours later. He was assisting in loading and bringing down from the mountain a train load of logs. He was seated on top of a car load with logs pilled high above the sides of the car when the top or binder log was thrown from the car. Mr. Guptill fell from the car a distance of about fifteen feet and the log followed after rolling over him and breaking his arm and inuring him internally. He was brought down to the lumber mill on the train and then to the office of Drs. Ambrose in Ligonier where he died from the shock and internal injuries early in the afternoon. The coroner was notified and Dr. McMurray, of Youngwood, a cousin of Rev. H. L. McMurray and deputy coroner for Dr. C. A. Wynn, was here Saturday forenoon and viewed the body, finding death by accident as stated above. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of C. A. Lowry & Sons and prepared for burial and was taken to Everson, Fayette county, Sunday morning to the home of his father-in-law, Daniel Kuhns, from where interment was made Sunday afternoon. He lived with his wife and four children on the mountain near the line of the P. W. & S. railroad.
