New Stone Quarry
Being Opened On The Mountain On The Byers-Allen Property
An agreement has recently been made between the Byers-Allen Lumber company of
Ligonier and Edward Johnston, Andy Peterson, Wilbert Campbell and others for the opening and operation of a blue stone quarry on the top of Laurel Hill mountain along the line of the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset railroad at the place where the stones were quarried for the M. C. church of Ligonier about seven miles from here. Work has already begun in making ready for taking out blocks and screenings. About a dozen men were at work last week and at least twenty-five will be employed in a few days and later the number increased to fifty or more. This new company has contracted for a large number of blocks and many car loads of screening to a period of several ears and there is no doubt but that the company will succeed if properly managed which it doubtless will be.
The opening up of this new industry on the Mountain is another evidence that business comes to the railroad that traverses the country where the material for furnishing the industrial world with supplies is to be found. This new quarry will be of an advantage to Ligonier in a financial way, and as the supply of blue rock similar to that at the McCance quarries is almost inexhaustible and will be easily operated, this industry will be permanent for many years at least. We are glad to see another item added to make Ligonier an important industrial center.
