Oakville Station Struck
Pole To Which Horse Was Tied Was Badly Shattered

There was but one bolt of lightning during the storm yesterday afternoon, but it was sufficient to do considerable damage out in Oakville, having struck a telephone wire and shattered several poles, besides entering the Oakville station of the Ligonier Valley Railroad Company. The station and dwelling combined, which is occupied by a family named Thompson, was slightly damaged, the plastering having been knocked off the kitchen walls, and several boards having been torn from the sides. The splinters from the boards were afterwards found in a field over 100 feet away. The members of the Thompson family who were at home, felt the shock distinctly, but no one was injured.

The lightning ran along the wire for a considerable distance and splinters were knocked from several poles. A horse had been tied to one of the poles that was struck, but it escaped injury. The splinters flew in all directions around the animal and it was badly frightened. Nearly everyone in Oakville turned out to view the destruction wrought by the lightning.
