LIGONIER TRAIN'S NARROW ESCAPE
ENGINEER'S EAGLE EYE SAVED THE TRAIN.
SWITCH WAS THROWN OPEN
A Gang of Oakville Boys Broke the Lock and Threw Open the Switch Just Before the Ligonier Valley Train Hove In Sight. Engineer Thomas Dunlap Was Watching the Track and Noticed the Open Switch In Time To Stop the Train. The Boys Ran Away.
The watchfulness of Engineer Thos. Dunlap, of the Ligonier Valley railroad, was the only thing that saved the 6:18 train on the L. V. R.R. on last Friday evening from a bad wreck and probably loss of life or serious injury.
Several boys from Oakville, among whom was Peter Congura, whose tale of alleged cruelty by his parents and the subsequent investigation by the Humane Agent will be remembered by the readers of the Bulletin, were playing out on the glass works switch on
Friday evening and, just before the train hove in sight, they succeeded in breaking the lock on the switch and throwing the switch open.
About this time the train hove in sight and the boys ran. Thomas Dunlap, the engineer, had his eye on the track ahead and noticing the open switch, he threw on the brakes and
succeeded in stopping the train in time to prevent it running into the open switch.
The switch was closed and the train went on its way. Constable Harry M. Fry this morning succeeded in capturing young Congura, after a chase which took in a good bit of the country around here, the boy leading him to Kingston and Youngstown before getting
caught. The other boys have not been located as yet.
