Freight Wreck Near Latrobe
Last Saturday Morning On Ligonier Valley Railroad
Four Heavy Cars Off Track

Steel Cars Loaded With Blue Rock Ballast Weighing About 80 Tons Each Wreck Occurred At Loyalhanna Shaft No. 2 Tore Up 100 Feet Of Track New Florence Wreck Crew Removed The Cars

A freight wreck occurred on the Ligonier Valley railroad near Latrobe last Saturday forenoon. As the freight train in charge of conductor C. E. Naugle reached the siding of the Loyalhanna shaft No. 2 the frog of the switch gave way causing the four rear cars of the train which contained eleven loaded cars, six loaded with blue rock, to leave the track. The wreck occurred at 9:05 in the forenoon of Saturday. The capacity of the four steel cars thrown from the tracks is 100,000 pounds, and the cars loaded with ballast was from 75 to 80 tons. The four rear cars leaving the rails tore up about 100 feet of the track and obstructed the track. The cars were very little damaged.

The New Florence wrecking crew responded promptly to the assistance of the Ligonier Valley people and with their steam crane removed the cars back onto the track.

The morning passenger train was blocked in at Latrobe. It is due here at 10:03 a.m., but did not arrive until 3:50 p.m.
