Mrs. Schenley Dead
Owned Much Valuable Property in Pittsburg Donated Schenley Park to the City

Mrs. Mary E. Schenley, Pittsburgs benefactress, died Wednesday at her home in London, of the infirmities of old age. She gave to Pittsburg the magnificent park which bears her name and much other valuable property.

Mrs. Schenleys name and affairs were peculiarly interwoven with Pittsburg interests. Her property holding in Pittsburg were so extensive that she was its heaviest individual taxpayer. The Pennsylvania railroad and the Jones and Laughlin Steel company alone pay heavier levies. Most of her holdings were real estate, but she had some money invested in American mortgages and stocks.

The value of the Schenley holdings in Western Pennsylvania is close to $50,000,000. It lies in Pittsburg, Allegheny, Westmoreland and C Crawford counties. What the revenue from it is no one but her American agent, Mr. Herron, knows. It is estimated at nearly $1,500,000, however, this being on the basis of the low rentals in view of the long leases under which most of it is held. She owns the blue stone quarries in the Ligonier valley operated by Booth & Flinn, Ltd. She also owns farming land in this county.

Mrs. Schenley was born in Kentucky in 1826 and was the daughter of Col. Wm. Croghan, Jr., and Mary Croghan, nee OHara, daughter of Gen. James OHara. She was married to Capt. E. W. H. Schenley while in her teens and is the mother of nine children, six of whom are living.
