Segers Plan A New Railroad
Coal, Lumber And Building Stone Interests Would Connect P.R.R. and B&O.
To Run By Way Of Ligonier

Meeting Will Be Held In This City Next Week At Which Final Decision On The Line From Indian Creek To New Florence Will Be Reached

A new railroad, connecting the Baltimore & Ohio, at Indian Creek station, near Connellsville, with the Pennsylvania railroad at New Florence, is planned by the interests in the Seger Coal and Coke Company, of Pittsburgh. Other concerns heavily interested in Westmoreland and Fayette county coal and timber lands are associated with the Segers in this plan, and the prospects at present indicate that the project will be made a go.

A joint meeting of the parties in interest will be held in Pittsburgh this week to take the matter up for final decision. Preliminary surveys sufficient for a location have been completed and the engineers report that a feasible route for a low-grade road can be found. The route passes through Ligonier and will open one of the largest tracts of valuable timber and coal lands which remain still undeveloped by railroads in Western Pennsylvania.

In addition to the coal and timber, the glass rock and blue rock and other building stone deposits are very large, and it is claimed that these alone would justify the expense of constructing the line. The stone is of superior quality and almost unlimited in quantity. The demand for the quality found there is far in excess of the present available supply.

In anticipation of favorable action at the coming meeting, steps have already been taken by those promoting the new line to secure options on rights of way at point where difficulty might later arise.

It is expected that this line will prove attractive to passenger traffic s well as freight. The country through which it passes is being yearly more closely settled and the natural position of the road as a link between the B&O and its controlling line, the Pennsylvania railroad, would tend to an interchange of business under the present pressure.
