Great Forest Fires in Westmoreland County
Latrobe, May 1. The most disastrous forest fire in years is sweeping over Chestnut Ridge, covering an area of several miles, and destroying thousands of dollars worth of timber. The fire started last night in the vicinity of Laughlintown, which was threatened with destruction. A Fierce wind which continued throughout the night, fanned the flames into fury and swept the fire far up the valley destroying several logging camps and much valuable lumber. The entire force of the Byers-Allen Lumber company and the adjacent camps fought the fire until morning. Farmers were compelled to start crossfires to save their buildings. Several farm houses in the vicinity of Stoystown are reported to have been destroyed. The fire has been burning all day and fears are entertained that it may break out afresh tonight.
