Old Rumor Revived
The East Depot Street Residents Not Worried
The old rumor about the Pennsylvania Railroad taking all the property on the north side
of East Depot Street between Alexandria Street and the Ligonier Valley Railroad, was
revived yesterday when a prominent citizen of Latrobe said that an official of the road
had told him that the company was seriously contemplating the matter and would in all
likelihood take the property. The official gave as the reason for this course, the fact that
the present freight yard facilities were entirely inadequate and also the fact that the
Ligonier Valley Railroad must have room for a station.
If the above news is correct the residents of East Depot Street know nothing about it,
neither do the local railroad officials. The residents along the street are going ahead
cleaning house and do not appear to be in the least alarmed over the rumor.
At the railroad, everything is going according to the original plans of the company. The
Ligonier Valley trains will be run just where they are now, space being left between the
south wall and the elevated tracks for a single track for the L.V.R.R. thus requiring no
elevation of the track of the latter road. The arrangements for the freight yards are also
being carried out according to the first plans of the company.
Consequently everything looks as though the rumor is without any foundation.
Meanwhile the new station is going up rapidly and it will be but a story and a half high.
The first layer of stonework has been laid and the joists for the ground floor have all been
placed.
