Morning Fire Ligonier Station
Ligonier Valley Station House Badly Damaged
Cause Of Fire A Mystery
Friday Morning At 6:45 O'clock Alarm Given By Blowing Of Engine Whistle And Ringing Of Fire Bell Ligonier Fire Company Responded Promptly And By Their Efforts Fire Was Soon Extinguished Property Of Wm. Stouffer Considerably Damaged By Water
On last Thursday morning about 6:45 o'clock the people of town were considerably alarmed by a prolonged whistle of an engine of the Ligonier Valley railroad followed by the ringing of the fire bell calling out the hose company. The alarm was caused by the discovery of fire in the Ligonier Valley railroad station. The hose company responded promptly but when they arrived the fire was blazing ten or twelve feet out of the window and above the roof. The hose was attached to the fire plug and the water soon turned on the fire. The fire soon yielded to the flow of water and in a few minutes was under control and entirely out in less than an hour without destroying the building and only damaging the upper part of the west end of the structure.
The upper story of the eastern end of the building was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Stouffer and their household goods were considerably damaged by the water necessary in putting out the fire. Especially was the kitchen utensils and furniture badly damaged.
Had not the fire been discovered as promptly as it was and had not the response of the hose been very prompt and the wind blowing the blaze away from the building instead of into it, the entire structure would have soon been in ashes. It was a narrow escape all around. The members of the hose company deserve special praise for their promptness and the excellent work done by each member in extinguishing the fire. The hose company is an organization that is necessary to the protection of the town from fire and should receive the encouragement and support of the entire town. The company should always be kept up to its highest point of proficiency as the protection of the town from fire by the water works without a well organized and proficient hose company would be quite nugatory indeed.
