Beautiful, Romantic Idlewild
As announced in these columns several weeks ago, the Ligonier Valley Railroad Company has at last succeeded in purchasing the tract of land embraced by the Idlewild Parks. This is known as the most beautiful as well as the most romantic picnic ground in Western Pennsylvania. And now that it is owned by the Company it will be made much more attractive, if possible, than heretofore.
It is well known that the Parks are already furnished with a large and substantial dancing pavilion, a large covered dining hall, to which is attached a kitchen containing cook stoves furnished with natural gas and an elegant covered building suitable for a restaurant, etc. This season a new bridge, high, wide and substantially built, spans the placid Loyalhanna and will accommodate the crowd, no matter how large.
In addition to these things more improvements are being made and numerous other attractions added. While the drinking water at Idlewild has always been abundant and of good quality, in the near future it will be more widely distributed through the Parks. Pipes are now being laid in every direction and in a short time fountains and hydrants will be plentiful. The water will be brought from large springs away up on the mountain and will be of the purest crystalline nature imaginable. More swings of different kinds will be put up and a large number of devices for amusement and passing the time pleasantly will be found at various points throughout the grounds.
The base ball park, that portion of the grounds that has been such an attraction in past seasons, will be greatly improved also. We are assured by the management that no pains or expense will be spared to make Idlewild Parks the model picnic grounds of the State, and from the way in which the contemplated improvements are progressing under the skillful management of Superintendent Senft, we believe that all that is predicted of it will come to pass.
