Indiana Gazette
Wednesday, July 2, 1890

Upon the invitation of Thos. E. Watt, the genial passenger agent of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Pittsburgh, we made a short trip over the Ligonier Valley Railroad on Friday, to the pretty mountain town of Ligonier, stopping at Idlewild Park long enough to look at the improvements made there. At Idlewild we had the good fortune to find Geo. Senft, Superintendent of the Ligonier Valley Railroad, one of the most accommodating and pleasant gentlemen in the railroad business, who escorted us over the park. The grounds have been largely increased and many improvements and conveniences erected for the pleasure seekers who go there every year. The lake with its boating features, and the large dancing platform are among the chief attractions added to the park, the new buildings for the accommodation of those who have charge of the cooking department are no small addition to the attractions to the place.
On Friday three long trains brought the pupils, teachers, directors and the friends of the 16th Ward Public schools of Pittsburg to the number of 2,150 to the park, but such is the extent of the grounds that there was no crowding and it appeared as though there was but very few people present. Franks Hotel and cottages, the new hotel at Ligonier, four miles above the park is perhaps the best located and best furnished summer resort in the State. The house is new and comfortable, and the furniture and fittings are all new and the best that could be furnished. The hotel was erected by the railroad company and no money was spared to make it attractive and pleasant. John Hargnett Frank, the popular landlord has charge of the houses and to those who have been Mr. Franks guests in the past that is enough, his reputation as a landlord extends beyond the boundaries of the State. If you want a few days of quietness, cool pleasant days and refreshing rest at night, go to Ligonier.
