The Iron Steed - Idlewild

On Monday the Ligonier Valley Railroad received their monster locomotive "Idlewild" and a large and curious crowd gathered about the station to view the future but yet powerless monarch of this thrifty little road. The new locomotive was shown short of its stack, cow-catcher and many other appendages and had not yet felt the breath of life but in a few days it will be coursing between Ligonier and Latrobe with a long train of freight and passengers.

The "Idlewild" is an eight wheeler of the latest improved pattern built by the famous Baldwin Locomotive works of Philadelphia, and it appearance on the road marks the beginning a practically a new era. Heretofore the engines used on this road have been mere infants beside the big fellows on the P.R.R., but the "Idlewild," like the beautiful park for which it is named, is equal to the best of them.

It might not be amiss to say right here that under the superintendency of Mr. Senft the Ligonier Valley is one of the best managed roads in the country. Accidents are few and far between and it is a very rare case when their trains are not on time. The Advance congratulates Mr. Senft on his successful superintendency and hopes the "Idlewild" may, on it journeys through mountain and vale, be attended only by good luck.
