One Of The Products Of The Ridge
Friday last the writer in company with Dr. S. E. Burchfield visited the new blue rock quarries, at Long Bridge Station, on the line of the Ligonier Valley Railroad. These quarries are about half way up the hill on the opposite side of the Loyalhanna from the railroad, and are operated by Messrs. Hutchinson & Harrison. They are not running very strong at present, having only two block makers and five laborers at work. As the quarries were but recently opened the rock presents a very broken and irregular face. The stratum of limestone at this point is at the very least calculation one hundred feet thick. It is of a beautiful dark blue color, and but seldom shows any chrystalline formations. As near as could be judged from that portion of the rock exposed, some layers or veins of it are of the magnesian variety, while others are very sandy or silicous. This is an outcrop of the rocks of the Silurian system, and is, without a doubt, part of the same seam that is now being worked at the famous Blue Rock Quarries. The hills are full of this stone, and we are informed that it will shortly be opened up at Long Bridge, on the same side of the creek the railroad is located on. This rock is quarried and converted into the famous Belgian paving blocks. To prepare it for market requires a great deal of skilled labor.
