The work of widening the gauge of the Ligonier Railroad is nearly completed. Cars of the standard gauge are now being run. The change was necessary because the business of the road has increased so rapidly that the freight could not be handled. The famous Blue Rock quarries ship large numbers of Belgian blocks for paving, besides broken stone for ballasting. Lumber and building stone form a portion of the freight. The probabilities are that the coal along the road and in the Ligonier Valley will now be opened. Valuable deposits of iron ore are also said to lie along this route. Many years ago a large forge worked by the water-power of the Loyalhanna was located about three miles from Latrobe, at the entrance to the water-gap.
