Gauge To Be Changed

The track of the Ligonier Valley Railroad which extends from Latrobe to Ligonier, a distance of ten miles, is to be changed from a narrow to the standard gauge, same as the Pennsylvania Railroad. The work will be commenced at once and will be completed as soon as possible. When this is done we would like to see the L.V.R.R. extended on to connect with some other road and thus give us another outlet. When the South Pennsylvania road is built the Ligonier Valley will intersect it. The Messrs. Mellon are now negotiating for several new locomotives and other rolling stock necessary to equip the road. The reason given for the change of gauge is that at present they are unable to move the freight and do the work demanded. The shipment of Belgian paving blocks and railroad ballast from the famous Blue Rock quarries makes a great deal of work not considered when the road was first constructed. We are pleased to see this change and as there is talk of developing the coal along the line and building coke ovens, we feel assured that Latrobe will be directly benefited.
