A shaft is being sunk on the farm of Col. John McFarland, near Ligonier, Westmoreland county, with a view of unearthing coal or ore, and it is said that the projectors are not without hopes of both. Certain it is that the northern outcrop of the Connellsville vein is not yet definitely known, though if coal is found it is more likely to be similar to that mined at Latrobe.
