Latrobe Advance
Wednesday, August 13, 1879
Masonic Pic Nic. - On Friday last, August 8, 1879, Loyalhanna Lodge, No. 275, of Latrobe, gave a basket picnic at Idlewild. The time set for the event was Thursday, but on account of the inclemency of the weather it was postponed until the day following. Although the weather did not look any too propitious on Friday morning, quite a number of the Masons and their families, and a few not belonging to the order, who had been invited, took the 11:00 A.M. train on the Ligonier Valley Railroad, and were soon whirled to the beautiful picnic grounds at Idlewild.
The Latrobe String Band furnished the music for the occasion, and during the entire day joy and pleasure reigned supreme. The evening train took a number to the scene of festivity who were unable to go any sooner. R. B. Mellon, the gentlemanly and efficient conductor, and manager of the picnic grounds, procured lanterns, and placing them at suitable places, lit up the platform, and the dancing continued unabated until about ten o'clock, when a special train bore the merry but tired excursionists to their homes.
The dinner and refreshments generally were of the highest order, and were enjoyed by everybody. The occasion was a very enjoyable one, and everything owing to the excellent management, passed off pleasantly.
