The Ligonier Valley Railroad, from Latrobe to the romantic village of Ligonier, was formally opened December 15 with appropriate ceremonies. The grading of the road was commenced several years ago, but the pressure of the times compelled a halt. A new contract for the grading and completion of the work was awarded to Mellon & Brother during the past summer, and the road completed in about two months. It is ten and one-third miles in length, and runs for that distance long the banks of the beautiful Loyal Heenner (sic) [Loyalhanna creek]. Among the most prominent of those who have carried on this enterprise are the President, S. H. Baker, Esq., Dr. W. D. MGowan, Major Glessner, N. M. Marker, George E. Clifford, Joseph Clifford, J. H. Frank, Col. John MFarland and a host of others, residents of the valley.
